Job Description:

Helps with the installation, service, and repair of environmental control systems in residences. Helps mounting compressor and condenser units on platform or floor, using hand tools, following blueprints or engineering specifications. Helps with the fabrication, assembly and ductwork and chassis parts installation. Helps cut and bens tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment tools. Cuts and threads pipe, using machine-threading or hand-threading equipment. Joins tubing or pipe to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings, or unions, and solders joints, using torch, forming complete circuit for refrigerant. Helps connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating-ventilation fans to control panels. Injects small amount of refrigerant into compressor to test systems, and adds refrigerant to build up prescribed operating pressure. Observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to ensure efficient operation. Tests joints and connections for gas leaks, using leak detection instrumentation or soap-and-water solution. Wraps pipes in insulation batting and secures them in place with cement or wore bands. May install, repair, and service air-conditioners in accordance with applicable codes, standards and/or manufacturer’s instructions. Will be required to possess the appropriate EPA certification, or an approved equivalent, to perform work with refrigerant.

Helper – A non-journey level craft worker, aspiring to gain knowledge and skills in a specific craft at the beginner level. Works directly with either journey or foreman level craft worker. Requires constant supervision. May be referred to as an Apprentice.
