Fluor Firefighter in Afghanistan
Drives and operates firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, tankers, and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles. Chooses appropriate route to the fire scene and properly approaches and positions vehicle. Performs daily preventive maintenance for assigned firefighting vehicles and equipment to ensure constant operational readiness. May drive emergency response vehicles to scene of fire following predetermined routes, or alternate routes when necessary. Participates in regular training and exercises as required and assists in training other firefighters on driving vehicles and operating assigned equipment. Provides firefighting services to minimize loss of life and property in the event of fire. Controls and extinguishes fires. Serves as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew and serves as a team member. May be assigned to lead the work of others, direct persons during evacuations of facilities or emergency situations, and provide guidance and assistance to victims of emergencies. Maintains and utilizes special firefighting equipment, tools, and gear including but not limited to PPE, hoses, ladders, extinguishers, and other firefighting apparatus. May perform administrative functions, alarm room operations or other duties as required. Dependent upon staffing, may be assigned to either a Firefighter or Driver Operator position. Ensures the safety of all firefighters by following proper procedures.
Position may be located in a war zone in a contingency environment with harsh and dangerous working and living conditions, including lifting and carrying 40 pounds of personal protective equipment for extended periods of time. To ensure safety, health, and security measures within the contract are met, all employees shall be literate in English (read, write, speak and understand).
Living conditions on the project are most likely austere. The most austere sleeping may be in environmentally conditioned tents on “Army type” cots. Restrooms and showers may be 250 feet or further from sleeping quarters. Laundry service for 15 pounds twice per week is commonly provided. Meals are provided at regular intervals in cafeteria or “dining facility” style environment. Living area will most likely have constant hum of generators or similar equipment nearby.
